The Brahma Viharas is a term pointing to feeling states that have been compared to the abodes of the gods, the dwellings of the blessed. They have been described as the “impersonal emotions.,” emotions which do not support or enhance the narrow feeling of self. Instead of supporting a contracting self, these four feelings expand indefinitely, immeasurably.

In traditional texts, it is said that they can be cultivated by deliberate effort and application of will. In other words, we can learn to dwell in feeling states which expand indefinitely and lead us out of our contracted view of ourselves.

Natural Tai Chi

True understanding in a person has two attributes:

awareness and action.

Together they form a natural tai chi

Who can enjoy enlightenment and remain indifferent to suffering in the world?

This is not in keeping with the Way

Only those who increase their service along with their understanding can be called men and women of Tao.

-- Hua Hu Ching, Lao Tzu

The Hands That Work On Us...

What is required of us is that we love the difficult and learn to deal with it. In the difficult are the friendly forces, the hands that work on us.

-- Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)
